Style Notes from Shea

Tips from Shea
Choose Your Color Story
Choose a cohesive color palette that resonates with your vision, setting the tone for a harmonious balance throughout the room. Remember that colors can affect mood—cool tones promote tranquility while warm tones create a sense of comfort.
Mix, Don't Match
Combine smooth percale with textured linen, or pair a block print duvet with solid shams. Mixing textures and patterns adds visual interest without feeling busy—just keep your color palette consistent as the thread that ties it all together.
Style In Layers
Start with quality sheets as your foundation—fitted and flat in a fabric that suits your sleep style. Layer a duvet or coverlet for warmth and texture, then finish with a quilt or throw at the foot of the bed. Each layer serves a purpose—breathability, weight, or just the right amount of visual softness.
Finish it with Pillows
Decorative pillows add personality and polish. Mix sizes and textures to create a collected look that feels intentional and inviting.

Style 01 – Subtle & Neutral
Pair solid pillows with subtly patterned pillows within a neutral color palette.

How to Choose a RugChoose a bedframe that complements your overall bedroom style, whether it’s modern, rustic, or traditional—consider materials like wood, metal, or upholstered designs for added texture. When selecting a headboard, opt for one that matches or contrasts harmoniously with the bedframe, providing a focal point that enhances the room’s aesthetic and anchors your space. Shop Rugs |

How to choose a DresserInstead of matching dressers and nightstands, create visual interest by pairing pieces with contrasting finishes—a wooden dresser can be complemented with a painted nightstand, for example. For narrower spaces, choose a taller dresser, and always let your required size for your space guide your selection. Shop Dressers |

How to Choose a NightstandSelect nightstands that align closely with the height of your mattress to ensure functionality and comfort. If mixing different styles, maintain uniformity in lamp height for balance, even if the nightstands vary in height. Shop Nightstands |

How to Choose A MirrorA mirror placed above a dresser adds elegance, while a floor mirror serves beautifully with a seating arrangement or against an empty wall. In smaller bedrooms, strategically place mirrors to reflect natural light and create the illusion of additional space—positioning a mirror opposite a window can dramatically brighten the room. Ideally, limit yourself to one statement mirror in the bedroom to maintain a cohesive look while maximizing its functional and aesthetic impact. Shop Mirrors |

How to Choose ArtLayered art arrangements can bring depth and visual interest to your space- curate dynamic groupings of artwork above a console or dresser. When placing art above the bed, opt for smaller groupings of three or a more understated, elongated piece to keep the space feeling balanced. Shop Artwork |

How to Choose LightingLimit the mix of metals in the bedroom to two to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. Utilizing two lamps on either side of the dresser will lend a more polished, formal appearance, while a single lamp can be balanced by leaning art and a decorative vase with branches on the opposite side. When selecting table lamps for nightstands, choose pairs that complement your overall design while providing adequate light for reading. Shop Lighting |

How to choose Bedroom SeatingIncorporate a chair, bench, or settee that fits the scale of your bedroom; a plush armchair can create a cozy reading nook, while a sleek settee works well in smaller spaces. Choose upholstery that coordinates with your color palette, and consider custom fabrics for a personal touch. Place a small accent table nearby for added functionality. Shop Lounge Chairs |

How to Choose Accent PiecesUse accents like throw pillows, blankets, and decorative trays to infuse your personality into the space—layering textures and colors can create visual interest and an inviting warmth. Consider rotating seasonal textiles to keep your bedroom feeling fresh throughout the year—lightweight linens for summer and plush velvets or knits for winter. Don't forget to incorporate plants or greenery to bring life and freshness into the room. For a cohesive look, choose 2-3 decorative objects in varying heights for nightstands and dressers, maintaining enough clear surface for functionality. Shop Pillows & Throws |
Bedding - FAQ’s
A well-designed bedroom is more than just a place to sleep—it’s a retreat that should feel both well-designed and restful. From choosing the perfect bed to layering textures for every season, discover our favorite ways to make your bedroom feel effortlessly inviting.
If the piece can accommodate an adjustable mattress, it will be indicated on the product page, along with information about the bed frame’s interior dimensions. However, you must check the clearance requirements for your specific mattress to ensure it will fit.
Please note the “Top of Slats to Top of Siderails” or “Box Spring Allowance” measurement in the list of dimensions for the bed frame you are interested in. We will list two heights if the slats are adjustable. This will help you determine the height of box spring you may want.
Most of our bed frames do not require a box spring; it just depends on the profile of bed that you prefer. A box spring can help add height and support to your mattress, but it is not always necessary.
Start with the bed—it should be the focal point of the room. With your bed as an anchor, add in nightstands on either side to create balance, and if space allows, a bench at the foot of the bed for both function and charm. When arranging additional furniture, like a dresser or seating area, be mindful of flow—leave enough space to move comfortably around the room.
Think about scale—a bed that’s too large can overwhelm the space, while one that’s too small can feel underwhelming. For a more tailored look, consider the headboard—it sets the tone for your design. Upholstered styles add softness, while wood or metal frames bring character. And don’t forget comfort—from sheets to shams to quilts, layer your bed for warmth and comfort.
Layering is key! In cooler months, heavier duvets and wool or knit throws bring an added layer of warmth. In warmer seasons, swap them out for lightweight linen or cotton, which are breathable and airy. No matter the time of year, layering textures—like a quilt over a duvet—creates a cozy, inviting look.
Storage should be both functional and beautiful. Opt for nightstands with drawers, use baskets to organize essentials, and, if space allows, bring in a bookcase, cabinet, or built-in for linens and bedding.
As your personal retreat, your bedroom should feel uniquely yours. Mix in textures and colors that resonate with you most—from wallpaper to the frame of your bed, to the pattern of your pillows, and the hardware in your lighting. Then, incorporate meaningful details—framed photos, artwork, or heirloom pieces. Scent is another great way to personalize—candles, diffusers, or fresh flowers in a beautiful vase will make your bedroom feel like a true retreat.
